The Carob tree is native to the Mediterranean region that produces 'pods' that can be transformed into cacao-like products and is called a superfood. The history of the tree goes back thousands of years coming from the Middle East / Greece (multiple sources stating different origins), and a carob tree can easily live for more than 100 years.

Benefits to our planet

But this tree is not only good for your health and taste buds! The leaves of the tree are green all year long, are fairly flame resistant and are so-called 'nitrogen fixers'. They fertilize the soil with their leaves with nitrogen, reducing the need to do so with external inputs like manure. As the tree is drought resistant it is perfectly fit for our environment.

The Carob tree will only produce after more or less 10 years, so your adoption helps us cover the costs to plant this tree without having any yield the first years. In those early years your tree will absorb and store carbon in the soil, improve biodiversity by providing shade and a home for insects & birds (bees love the flowers!) and it will help improve building healthy soil that can retain more water and therefore be more resilient against more extreme weather conditions.

Around the Carob tree we will plant multiple different species with the principles of Syntropic Agroforestry, where we mimic the principles of nature and forests. This will be an experiment that we hope will inspire other farmers to transform their farms improving their financial viability and the ecosystem they live in.

Fun Facts

Over the last months we have discovered many way carob can be transformed:

We absolutely love putting carob paste on our pancakes instead of nutella, carob vinegar on our salads during summer and we even enjoyed a hot carob drink last winter. The hot carob drink wasn't Carlo's favorite, that's definitely the carob paste on pancakes. Coralie is the queen of salads and has found her new go-to vinegar for preparing lunches and dinners for guests.

By adopting a Carob tree you get:

  • A certificate of adoption for you or the person you wish to offer it
  • The possibility to visit & get a private tour of the farm. You will be able to see the progress of your tree(s) and its impact on the ecosystem.
