EN - The three pieces which make up this CD date from around 1980. Ad alteras luces (“Towards other lights”), for a small ensemble of chords and winds, was created at the Academia Chigiana of Sienna following the composition seminar given by Franco Donatoni. It expresses an urgent desire, demonstrated by a long ascent of unstructured and partly formed phrases, culminating in a paroxysm, which is followed by a progressive breaking up and a final attempt at appeasement of a more melodious nature. In a very similar spirit, and for the same type of ensemble, Caillet conceived E nocte (“Of the night”), performed during a concert at the Villa Medicis in Rome. The beginning borrows from the concluding elements of the preceding piece. These are developed with growing intensity and increasing violence compared to the median section. The dematerialization of this block finds its resolution in a passage that attempts to translate a newly found calm, but with greater depth this time. The more experimental Enfeu formed part of a teaching programme in Taverny in the Parisian area. It contains three distinctive components, each using a different approach: a baritone voice (sung by Michel Verschaeve), a chords and percussion ensemble (directed by Bernard Fonteny), and a double mixed choir of amateurs (adults and children), participating with partially random high notes. The piece is taken from a poem by René Char (The evening card), and attempts to reproduce, with various nuances, the musical counterpoint of the subtle meanders of the melancholy emanating from the text.
 
FR - Les trois pièces contenues dans ce CD datent des environs de 1980. Ad alteras luces (« Vers d’autres lumières »), pour petit ensemble de cordes et vents, a été créée à l’Accademia Chigiana de Sienne au terme du séminaire de composition de Franco Donatoni. Il s’y  exprime une pressante aspiration, rendue par une longue montée à partir de bribes de phrases en quête de structuration, culminant dans un paroxysme suivi d’une progressive dissolution, avec tentative d’apaisement final de caractère plus mélodique.  C’est dans un esprit délibérément du même ordre, et pour formation semblable, qu’a ensuite été conçue E nocte (« De la nuit »), donnée dans un concert de la Villa Médicis à Rome. Le début y reprend les éléments conclusifs de la pièce précédente. Ceux-ci donnent lieu à un développement d’intensité croissante, avec violence encore accrue de la phase médiane. Puis la dématérialisation de ce bloc trouve sa résolution dans une plage visant à traduire l’atteinte d’un calme sensiblement plus profond, cette fois. Enfeu, de nature davantage  expérimentale, s’inscrivait dans le cadre d’une action pédagogique menée à Taverny en région parisienne. S’y trouvent associées trois composantes bien distinctes dans leur traitement : une voix chantée – et tout in fine parlée – de baryton (partie tenue par Michel Verschaeve), un ensemble à cordes et percussions (dirigé par Bernard Fonteny), et un double chœur mixte d’amateurs (adultes et enfants) intervenant en sons de hauteur partiellement aléatoire. La pièce est bâtie sur un poème de René Char (La carte du soir), et s’attache à produire, avec diverses nuances, le contrepoint musical des subtils méandres de la mélancolie émanant de ce texte.
