CONFERENCE GROWING UP IN DIGITAL EUROPE: EVIDENCE FOR CHILD WELLBEING POLICY MAKING

There is, at present, no single data source to support comparative analysis of the wellbeing of children and young people across Europe as they grow up.

Europe’s first comparative birth cohort survey, a Research Infrastructure called Growing Up in Digital Europe or GUIDE for short, will be an important source of evidence in developing and evaluating social policies for children, young people and families across Europe for many years to come. GUIDE will follow the lives of a large representative sample of babies and school age children up to the age of 24.

This event is being held in the Innocenti building, which houses the UNICEF Office of Research, and will include presentations from key policy makers, NGOs and scientists from across Europe in the fields of child wellbeing and data infrastructures. It reports on the latest phase of the GUIDE project where large-scale pilot studies have been conducted in Croatia, Finland, France, Ireland and Slovenia with both parents and children.

GUIDE will directly benefit children and young people by collecting both objective and subjective wellbeing measures which will be used to ensure that social policies are evidence based.

Longitudinal surveys routinely inform policy development. GUIDE offers policy-makers the ability to:

• develop insights into key transitions in children’s lives
• make international comparisons on child and youth wellbeing
• evaluate policy interventions over time
