Thinking About Fall Preparation Workshop

In the heat of the summer we have to consider the details for bringing the bees into the autumn. The purpose of fall management is to assure the bee colonies are healthy throughout the winter so they can build up quickly in 2023. We hope to hone our skills to keep the hives disease-free, well fed with a productive queen. Observational beekeeping requires us to consider bee health, how is the queen doing, honey storage, the varroa mite, wax moth prevention, small hive beetle management, mice, how heavy is the hive, etc? Do we need to reduce the size of the brood chamber as we approach the autumn? What is our mite management going to look like?

Bill is an Eastern Apicultural Society Certified Master Beekeeper, graduate of the University of Montana's master beekeeping program, and president of the Connecticut Beekeepers Association. He teaches bee biology and various beekeeping methods, and appears as a guest speaker at local and regional beekeeping seminars. He has been published in Bee Culture, Bee Craft, and The American Bee Journal, and was presented the Distinguished Speaker Award at the 2019 EAS conference. Bill's special interests include bee biology and flight, and the connection between local flora and bee behavior.
