Service Description

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) is the gateway for riding a motorcycle in the UK. It is a legal requirement and must be completed before you are allowed to ride. Whether you have never even been near a motorcycle before or have previous experience, it is suitable for everyone and tailored to your individual needs. The minimum age is 16 and you must have a provisional UK driving licence. We follow the syllabus as laid down by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). Safety is the key word and the main aim is to ensure the trainee is a safe and competent rider. It is a one day course and has five key elements: Element A: We will teach you all about safety equipment and why it is so important. Element B: We will teach you about the controls of the bike so you are familiar with them, how to use them (and how not to) and we will show you some checks to perform before you ride. Element C: You will be on the bike. We will start with the basics, even showing you how to sit correctly on the machine. We will then begin the process of riding. Starting with how to pull away and stop, onto control exercises and then moving onto simulated exercises designed to begin to give you experience of being on the road. Element D: We prepare for the road ride. We start by talking about your legal requirements, the importance of the Highway Code and how it is such an essential tool for road safety. We will discuss and understand other aspects that affect the safety of a motorcyclist, map common situations and junctions that you will come across. The element ends with a briefing to ensure that the road ride element is completed securely and safety. Element E: The course concludes after a two hour road ride. You will practice a range of road situations in a controlled environment in constant radio contact with your instructor. You will have an opportunity to practice the elements you learned in a live traffic scenario. There is no pass/fail outcome as CBT is not a test. You will undergo constant evaluation throughout the day. As long as you demonstrate you are safe and competent you will attain your certificate which will allow you to ride a motorcycle up to 125cc for a period of two years. If you do not pass your full licence within that time you will have to re-take CBT to continue riding. Note: CBT courses are available to book online and run on a Monday to Friday basis.
